Abstract:Ladakh is an important transportation, economic, and cultural center in the Western Himalayan region, but the modern historical materials about Ladakh are almost scattered. The author discovered the earliest Tibetan newspapers in Germany, the Ladakh Akhbar and the Ladakh Messenger, which covered various aspects of politics, economy, culture, religion, and other aspects of the early 20th century Western Himalayan region. They are rare and important historical documents for studying the modern history of the Ladakh region. The establishment and content of both newspapers contain a lot of Chinese elements, but also exhibit obvious religious prejudice and Orientalism, which can become a typical sample for studying the culture of the “contact zone” in the Western Himalayas.
